Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to pre-register for classes?

There is no pre-registration required. Choose the class time that works for you and arrive 15 minutes early for your first class so that we can show you around the studio and introduce you to your teacher. At that time you can tell us about yourself and any health concerns you may have.

How do I get started?

Please come to class well hydrated and with an empty stomach (avoid eating 3 hours before class). Shorts are recommended and shirts are optional for men. You will be sweating alot and will probably want to shower after class, so bring a change of clothes and two bath sized towels – one for your mat and one for your shower. Bring your yoga gear. If you don’t have any gear we have everything you need available at the studio for purchase or rent including clothes, mats, towels and water.

Who practices Bikram Yoga?

Bikram Yoga is for every body and any age. You must be able to sweat. Our teaching method encourages everyone to work to their own level of ability. Students range from teenage to seniors, athletes to the physically frail. There really is no typical Bikram Yoga student and we strive to make everyone feel comfortable no matter their level of fitness or experience.

Why is the room heated?

See the section called “Benefits of the Heat”.

Can I lose weight if I practice Bikram Yoga?

Yes. How much weight will depend on how often you practice, the intensity of your practice, your lifestyle and of course your diet. Bikram Yoga can help you achieve your ideal body weight.

Is Bikram Yoga aerobic?

Yes, absolutely. Bikram yoga raises the heart rate. In class your heart rate should reach it’s target exercise zone for at least 20 to 25 minutes. Many students consider Bikram yoga as their primary form of cardio.

How many calories will I burn in a single class?

This varies from person to person, but the average estimates range from 450 to 650 calories per class. There are many factors to consider. Feel free to bring a body monitoring device and measure it for yourself. Bikram yoga never fails to reward honest effort.

How long before I see results?

Most people start to experience the benefits immediately and the most profound results are cumulative. Results are the best with a regular and consistent practice.

How often should I practice?

Only you can decide how often to practice. We encourage daily practice at the beginning, if possible, and a minimum of 2 to 3 times a week for maintenance. One of the best things you can do for your overall health and well-being is to create positive, healthy habits. A regular Bikram yoga practice will help you to understand your body and it’s needs.

Can I practice at other Bikram Yoga studios with my membership or class card?

No. Bikram Yoga Westshore is independently owned and operated. If you are a certified Bikram teacher there will be no charge for class.

Is there a minimum age?

You must be old enough to sweat. Youth under the age of 18 must have a parent or legal guardian come to the studio and sign a waiver for them in the presence of an teacher. A teacher will be available 15 minutes before and after any scheduled class.

Does Bikram Yoga include meditation and can it improve concentration?

Hatha Yoga is a form of meditation. There are three essential components of a true Hatha yoga practice: maintaining relative stillness during the postures, mindful breathing throughout the practice, and the regular and liberal use of Savasana, or Dead Body Pose. Bikram has described what we do as a kind of forced meditation – meaning that the mental effort required to hold the postures requires a natural meditation. You will find over time that the class is a 90-minute moving meditation. Increased concentration, a reduction of stress levels and an improved sense of well being are just a few of the many awesome benefits.

Should I practice if I have a cold?

Yes, and it will likely help you to get over your cold more quickly. However you do need to consider your classmates. Colds and viruses can spread easily so it may be a good idea to stay home when symptoms are at their worst. Wash your hands frequently and cover your mouth when sneezing (bring your own hanky if need be).

Can I practice Bikram Yoga if I have asthma?

Yes. Bikram Yoga can greatly reduce the symptoms of asthma and is excellent for the overall health of the lungs and respiratory system.

Can I practice Bikram Yoga if I have a spine condition.

Yes. Check with your doctor first. We have many students with spine conditions such as scoliosis, herniated disks, fused disks, degenerated disks, etc.

Can I practice Bikram Yoga if I am pregnant?

Yes, but you must have an already established practice. It is not recommended for new students that are pregnant. For experienced students there is a pregnancy series that was developed by Rajashree Choudury and is available on video at the studio or online. If you are pregnant you should always get permission from your doctor before practicing Bikram Yoga.
